The ancient city of Ibadan is home to quite a number of fascinating and important structures. Ibadan is majorly known for its golden-brown mud houses with red roofs. You’ll see a lot of them in Yemetu, Bere and their environs. This is one fact that Ibadan peeps don’t like to hear. Overtime, Ibadan has changed drastically to a modern and attractive city. More like a constant evolution has taken over the whole city. This is due to recent economic investments and a rapid rise in the real estate sector of the city. A city that currently has the largest mall in West Africa. Ibadan surely has its own fair share of amazing architectural highlights. Here are five of them;
Mapo hall is one colonial structure that every Ibadan peep should be proud of. It was built in the early 20th century by the British colonial masters. It is one architectural highlight that has stood the test of time. It was used for administrative purposes. It was also used as the seat of power in the old Western region. Mapo Hall is located on Mapo hill in Ibadan.
This mall is a frequent hangout spot for University of Ibadan students. I mean who doesn’t like the good things of life. Especially if they are easy to get and aren’t far. Ventura Mall is located on Sango-UI road, just near University of Ibadan. It houses the popular Filmhouse cinemas, Latitude restaurant and bar, and several other fun spots.
The Mokola flyover is one architectural landmark that is a proud achievement of the current Oyo State government. At least the amount of flyovers in Ibadan can now compete with that of Ikeja in Lagos State. The Mokola flyover is situated just over the Mokola roundabout. It has succeeded in reducing traffic to a large extent.
Palms Shopping Centre
This isn’t your regular “Bodija market” or “Oja Oba”. Neither is it “Foodco supermarket” nor “Agbowo shopping complex”. This is the largest shopping mall in West Africa. And yes, it’s in Ibadan. Don’t be surprised, it’s the continuation of many architectural highlights in Ibadan. It is located at Ring-road.
Cocoa house is another important landmark in Ibadan. It’s a distinguished monument attached with so much cultural heritage. Cocoa house is the first skyscraper in tropical Africa. The 105 metre building is currently one of the tallest buildings in Nigeria. It’s located in Dugbe area of Ibadan.
