Enugu literally translates from Igbo to English as “Hill-Top”. Little wonder, it is a state blessed with so many hills. One of such hills is the Silicon hill which is in Nkalagu. Close to Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Nkalagu Campus, this hill has a large reservoir of the silicon mineral (The name “Silicon Hill” emanates from this feature). It is quite difficult to resist the breathtaking views of the hills, valleys, and plains as they present a jaw-dropping blend.
Ugwueme & Udi Hills
Another set of hills, the Ugwueme and Udi Hills are very suitable for mountaineering activities and other landscaping purposes. So you do not need to travel out of Nigeria for the mountaineering experience, visit Enugu. They are situated hundreds of meters above sea level, and underneath these hills are coal mines. There are also several tunnels that you can climb into to have a feel of what natural coal mining is all about.
Ngwo Cave & Waterfall
This is located at the Ngwo Pine Forest, Enugu, where a heavy waterfall descends from overhead limestone rocks. The waterfall forms a shallow pool at the cave floor before flowing out as a stream into the wild. Apart from the waterfall, there are several caves that are tucked away into the rock, and you can access some of them by climbing while some are easily within reach. Picnic at the Pine Forest and adventure in the cave, perfect blend added to bathing under the waterfall.
Ani Ozalla Lake
There is the Ani Ozalla Lake and the Ani Ozalla Shrine, both located close to Ozalla in Nkanu West LGA. The Ani Ozalla Lake is a natural body of water with numerous number of crocodiles which are regarded as sacred. The view of wildlife is extreme but for our sake do not enter the lake, you could me mistaken as a sacrificial lamb.
Ezeagu Tourist Complex
Set in the most natural terrains, the Ezeagu tourist complex comprises of a body of water, a lake, a natural spring, and a cave that stretches for three kilometers on end. This venue attracts various visitors and tourists from across Enugu State and beyond, and it is a place to spend some vacations or stay out the cultural festivities.
Many would argue that this is not really a beach like that. It looks more like a place where Nollywood plays a war scene. Akwuke-Atakwu Beach, Garki, Enugu, is still a worthy mention. It is good for hang-outs with friends and family during festive periods.
This is a tropical lake with maximum density during the warmest season. During the rainy season, the lake cools and then cools further as harmattan advances. It is a lovely place to rest and have relaxation.
