The Event Proper
This is a four day event that started in 1934 and has succeeded in maintaining a unique tradition of many decades. Argungu fishing festival involves various fishermen and locals competing for the biggest catch of the event. The event takes place on River Matanfada. The competition takes place for an hour after the fishermen must have heard the sound of a gunshot.The winner is one that has caught the biggest fish. He goes home with several prizes which includes a huge sum of money. The winner can take home as much as 7,500 US dollars.
The fishermen keenly contest in this event not only because of the big prize. They participate to generate revenue from their catch too. The bigger the fish, the more money you can get from it. In the 2005 edition of the festival, the winning fish weighed 75 kg. It needed four men to lift it on the scales. Argungu fishing festival attracts lots of tourists and visitors.
