With an average elevation of 1,800 meters, approximately, 5,900 feet and its highest peak being 2,419 meters (7,936 feet), Mambilla Plateau is the highest range of highlands in Nigeria. Located in Taraba State, Mambilla Plateau is a high grassland that shares a boundary with Cameroon. Its highest peak is Mount Gang (Chappai Wandi Mountain). The Plateau also has several villages sited on its hills, this makes it the highest habitable settlement above sea level in the country.
This scenic wonder of nature is under Sardauna Local Government Area of Nigeria and is close to the largest game reserve in Nigeria, the Gashaka Gumpti Game Reserve. There are various towns on the plateau with a population of more than 20,ooo people. Some of these towns are Gembu, Kakara, Nguroje, Maisamari, Warwar Mbamnga, Yerrmaru, Nguroje, Mayo Ndaga and many others. The highland also boasts of many ethnic groups owing to its number of villages and amount of languages and dialects. Mambilla is actually the most popular language spoken there while a few people speak Hausa.
Another interesting feature in this amazing highland is the existence of the only group of tea plantations in West Africa, located in Kakara town. The Mambilla Plateau serves as one of the few sources of some rivers in Taraba State. Rivers Benue, Taraba (which the state derives its name from) and Donga, are some of the rivers which have their sources from the plateau. Apart from tea plantations, the plateau also has a healthy number of cattle ranches and an attractive large expanse of guinea Savannah. It’s also home to some species of birds and animals, especially at the Gashaka-Gumti National Park and the Ngel Nyaki Forest Reserve.
The climate of the plateau is relatively cool and temperate as a result of its high elevation. Daytime temperatures hardly ever exceed 25 °C, making it the coolest region in Nigeria. Although, majority of the roads leading to the plateau are either not tarred or under construction, it is still accessible. There is also an airport in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, that can make the journey less stressful. You can also make use of utility vehicles, camping materials and lots of food when traveling to the Plateau.
A unique place that offers a wonderful mountainous and adventurous experience.
