One of my favourite places to chill is Calabar, Cross River state. Thanks to the NYSC scheme, I experienced Calabar first hand for a whole year. Also, I visited other parts of Cross River, but Calabar topped my list of choice destinations. If you asked a person to tell you about Calabar, I know the most likely answer. Calabar is a town where you spend all the money you make in other big cities. Little wonder Cross River is a haven for tourists.
Everywhere in Calabar is by somewhere. For example, the bustop of where I worked was ‘Atimbo by Access’. So, when you visit Calabar, be sure to ask “by where?” else they might have to announce a missing person on TV. – Banjo Damilola
One of the major hangouts in Calabar is Marina Resort. Located at “Highway by Eleven Eleven”, you are first greeted by the tallest flag in Africa and a beautiful fountain. Marina Resort can be visited at anytime of the day. The crowd is mostly large at night and during weekends. So prior to taking a trip to Marina resort, you should check to confirm why and when you will like to visit.
Chilling at the resort is as cheap as driving around Calabar (Transport fare is as low as
N50). No gate fee is required to check in except on public holidays or during festivities. With N2,000, you get to see a movie at the Filmhouse cinemas ( N1,000), with a pack of popcorn ( N400) and a bottle of Coca-Cola ( N200). With the leftover, you should visit the Slave History Museum (N100) and be generous to pay for someone else’s tour. Tortuga Island is another wonderful option too. Drinks go for as low as N500 and you get to chill close to the Atlantic ocean. Children can also be treated with fun rides at the amusement park. The boat ride is another adventure, you can get to Tinapa parks via the ride on water (So I was told).
For maximum enjoyment at Marina resort, here are the DOs and DON’Ts:
Have a Plan
Visit Marina resort with an outline of things to do. You do not want to be in a dilemma as to where you should invest your last 1,000 Naira.
The Slave Museum – First Port of Call
Regardless of how you plan to spend your time in Marina resort, you should endeavour to visit the slave museum first. That bit of education will probably be the only knowledge you acquire in Marina resort. Away from that it is all fun an games.
Pictures best explain memories made. You will like to look at photos and reminisce on the events of your visit.
Relax in Tortuga Island
An open air bar where you can savour a few drinks and still take a retreat. You will be amazed at how intelligent you begin to feel by just self-recollection.
There are just two pointers and they are:
Do not go alone
Going with friends maximizes the whole experience. You want to share the moments, at the end of the day.
Do not rush through activities
Repetition of activities at the resort is encouraged. Every attempt is a whole new experience when compared to the previous. I advise you spend the whole day at Marina resort.
